Dallas Enacts E-Cigarette Ban in Public Spaces, Expanding Smoke-Free Law

Dallas enacts new ordinance banning vaping and e-cigarettes in public spaces and workplaces, expanding smoke-free protections.

Dallas has officially implemented a new ordinance banning the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices in all public spaces, marking a significant expansion of its existing smoke-free regulations. Approved by the City Council a year ago, the updated law now treats vaping and cannabis use identically to traditional tobacco smoking, effectively making all indoor workplaces and public areas smoke-free zones.

The measure introduces penalties for violations and mandates new signage to inform the public. Public health leaders, including Charlie Gagen of the Texas Tobacco Control Coalition, praised the move as a vital step to protect workers and residents from harmful secondhand aerosol exposure. Gagen highlighted the urgency of the update, noting that one in four Texas teens has tried e-cigarettes, which pose risks to lung and heart health.

Research supports such comprehensive bans in reducing health risks associated with secondhand exposure. Advocates hope Dallas's action will encourage other cities to follow suit. Residents seeking to quit tobacco or vaping can access free support through the Texas Tobacco Quitline.
